The Big Summer Swap
For a new lease on your current livingroom (or main room) décor, move your furniture around from season to season. Often rooms will have two (or more, if you’re lucky) possible layouts. Put both of them to work. At the very least, chairs can be moved to different spots, rugs can be temporarily lifted, and this season’s accessories can replace the winter-y ones.
To bring the bright summer season indoors, slide chalk white or muslin-colored slipcovers on your sofa and chairs. Zip summer-y pillow covers onto your throw pillows. The color(s) should suit your personal taste, but keep it cool and frothy. Some refreshing choices are turq (the color of the water in St. John), lima bean, pale robin’s egg blue, or canteloupe. Choose a shade that works with your room and your mood. If you are a nautical person, try bold red and white striped pillow covers, and perhaps one small flag blue one for punctuation.
Try a new layout that serves summer living. Put some of the clutter away, and live for a couple of months in clearer spaces. The change will jog your sensibilities. You’ll see the room with new eyes. When you move it all back in the fall, the “old” room will look brand new again.
